The Role of Fomite Transmission
Fomite transmission occurs when lice (or lice eggs) are transferred from an infested individual to objects or surfaces that come into contact with their head. These objects can include clothing, stuffed toys, headgear, furniture and carpeting. Although far less common than direct head-to-head contact, it can happen and it is advisable to wash / clean items that may have been in contact with the infested person's head in the 2-day period following a treatment - if not just to remove any dead insects or egg casings.
Because lice rarely survive off the scalp for more than 48 hours, cleaning bed sheets, combs/brushes in temperatures of at least 55°C for at least 5 minutes and vacuuming fabric-covered items such as couches and carpets should be sufficient to remove any debris.
A Word of Caution_ Don't Go Overboard
While taking precautions to address fomite transmission is crucial, it's essential to avoid exhaustive cleaning measures that might not be beneficial. Sterilizing your entire house is not necessary and can be impractical. The primary focus should be on administering an effective nit treatment such as ISpyand reducing the chances of reinfection.
